Interview: 10 questions

1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background

Mauricio Sanhueza (1978,Lima), studied five years at the School of Communications at the University of Lima, and then in 2002 entered the School of Visual Arts Corriente Alterna graduating in 2006 with the silver medal of his class. Since 2004 he participated in several collective exhibitions inside and outside of Peru, and his videos have won and participated in many international festivals.

2. When, how and why started you filming?

I started professionally filming in December 2002 to January 2003. With some friends we make a film group to do a video clip for a Peruvian punk rock band, Futuro Incierto . This video was very popular at that time because it was produced with $ 400 or $ 500 American dollars and made it to the MTV Latin America channel (when they showed good music).The hero of the video was a handmade cardboard’s robot . This robot was a costume and it was very funny for watching moving, saving and falling in love with the girl. This video clip was also in many exhibitions in galleries on line and is one of the Babel Festival 2012 winners.

3. What kind of subjects have your films?
For the moment I want to represent the human unconscious, bizarre dreams, disturbing images. And the film gives me the possibility to do so. My film budget it’s always short and that’s the reason for work with a small group (me and two more friends).

4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?

I always think first in the economic possibilities of do a certain project (I got some of these scripts archived because of this). In some cases I’ve got the money to do the ones who need a cast and a production design, technicians, etc. And on the other hand the no narratives made entirely by myself.

5.Tell me something about the technical equipment you use
To the projects with actors we use a Cannon D7 , because it takes photos and at the same time you can recording Full HD video. But with my three last works we only use pictures to do the videos entirely with an old school effect: the Stop-motion.

6. What are the chances of the digital video technologies for creating art using “moving images” generally, and for you personally?

For me the possibility of moving images are infinites. Some people says that the image is dead, wasted and there’s no new things to do with it. For me this isn’t true at all. I think today more than ever the most of the artists as well the common people have the opportunity to use digital technology to express themselves, for better and worse. Today making moving images it’s more democratic, a few years before only big budgets were necessary to do a film. Now we all have the chance to recording our own point of view about reality or fantasy or whatever.

7. How do you finance your films?
At this time I always finance my videos. But later I’m going to participate in some kind of national film competition here in Peru or abroad to win at least the money for the production of a short film. By that I mean: Production Designer, multiple actors, etc. Maybe I’ll win a contest in the future, I hope so.

8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?

I do the both of them but I prefer work with a small team because It’s more easy to control certain things over the filming, that’s if I want to do a short film. The big difference between the two ways of working with moving images is that when I work alone I work with stolen clips from movies and internet (for the moment I don’t have a HD camera) and with them I make sometimes a personal critic to the society in which I lived and in other cases to experiment with music and sound effects associated with a visual discourse

9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?

I always like the Dada movement and later the Surreal Avant garde. With the First films of Bunuel, Jean Vigo, Cocteu, then the nouvelle vague. The author’s cinema of all times. Lynch, Raygadas, Tarkovsky, Chris Marker and many others.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
My future dream is make Indie Movies, with a low budget maybe with croud funding, I don’t know. But I want to experiment working with many actors and other people and do something very big at least for one time in my live as an artist.
