Interview:10 questions

1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I’m not only a videoartist. I love filming but I also work as a teacher (actually in France). I studied Art History in Madrid (Spain). These studies are to me an important asset and influence my work.

2. When, how and why started you filming?
I start filming at the Madrid Film School (ECAM) while I was finishing my studies in Animation in 2002. I was very interested in Norman McLaren’s filmography and other experimental films and for my graduation film I chose to do an animated collage with leaves and paper cuts. It was a real discovery.

3. What kind of subjects have your films?
I like working with the ideas of city and its cultural identity. I approach them like a game introducing symbolic elements and searching new meanings. The main objective is to build a mental and unconscious image of the cities.

4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
I try to change my style for each film. An important sign of my work is to experiment and explore new genres and dramatic discourses.

5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I still use an ancient camera MiniDV and a personal computer to edit and compose the effects of my films. I’m not a rich and famous videostart so it takes to me long time to produce every new video. Unfortunately, I’m very perfectionist.

6. The field of “art and moving images” (one may call it videoart or also differently) is representing an important counter position in contemporary art. Tell me more about your personal position and how you see the future of this field ( your personal future and the future of “art and moving images”)
I really don’t know what will happen. Internet seems the next big screen but I hope that it will never make disappear cinemas where I love to show my films.

7. How do you finance your films?
It isn’t easy to find public funding for independent videoart projects. Normally, I do by myself or by public aids in case of international projects.

8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
Usually I work alone but for the music I always ask a composer who creates the original soundtrack.

9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
All kind of films, commercials, lectures, adds, images and experiences I live everyday.

10. What are your plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I have no plans for the future. Art it’s always an unexpected meeting.
